Mumbai: Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam today wrote a hard-hitting letter to Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis demanding him to scrap development of the historic Dhobi Ghat under the SRA Scheme.
Requesting the CM to take immediate action Sanjay Nirupam said, “We have already exposed the vested interests of the BMC Commissioner through a letter dated August 13, 2018 which was written by Chief Engineer (Development Plan) to the architect. After being nailed, the BMC Commissioner is now attempting to shift the blame onto the SRA claiming that the entire issue lies within the purview of the SRA and not the BMC. But the main issue here is that amalgamation of this 140-year old heritage site should not be allowed under the SRA Scheme”.
Stating that he is not against the development of the Dhobi Ghat, Sanjay Nirupam further said that the interest of the people residing in the area should be protected and the identity of the heritage site must be maintained and preserved rather than surrender this plot to builders for profiteering.
Requesting an immediate stay on the BMC Commissioner’s action, Sanjay Nirupam has urged the Maha CM to review and revoke the decision to ensure that the historical Dhobi Ghat is preserved. The Mumbai Congress Unit Chief had visited Mahalakshmi’s Dhobi Ghat and interacted with the residents of the area who expressed their displeasure towards the BMC authorities for creating hurdles in the day-to-day functioning of the people.
